How to Pass the 2026 Civic Test: Format, Sample Questions, and a Simple Method to Succeed on Your First Attempt for Your Residence Permit or Naturalization

Introduction

Since January 1, 2026, the 2026 civic test has been mandatory to obtain your residence permit or French naturalization. Without passing it, it is no longer possible to obtain a first multi-year residence permit, a long-term residence card, or French citizenship.

It is normal to feel anxious. Many candidates arrive stressed, convinced that the test is very difficult. In reality, it is not a school exam: you do not need a high level of education or complex knowledge, but simply to show that you understand the essential rules of life in France.

With the right preparation, passing the 2026 civic test on your first attempt is entirely achievable.

What is the civic test really for?

This test is not designed to assess your intelligence or academic background. Its goal is much simpler: to verify that you can live in France by understanding how society functions and the principles that govern collective life.

It covers the values of the Republic, rights and duties, the role of institutions, and practical aspects of daily life such as school, work, healthcare, and relationships between citizens. The aim is integration, not selection.

The most common mistake

Many candidates assume that speaking French well will automatically ensure success. This is false. The 2026 civic test is not a language test. It is entirely possible to speak perfect French and still fail.

Most mistakes come from a lack of knowledge of essential concepts such as secularism (laïcité), gender equality, or how public services work.

For example, a question may ask whether a public official can refuse service based on your religion. Without knowing the Republic’s principles, many candidates answer incorrectly, even though the correct answer is simply based on the neutrality of public services.

Who must take the civic test?

You must take it if you are applying for a first multi-year residence permit, a long-term residence card, or French naturalization. The certificate of success then becomes a mandatory document. Without it, your application may be suspended, and processing times can be delayed by several months.

Civic test format

The 2026 civic test consists of a multiple-choice questionnaire on a computer. It has 40 questions and lasts 45 minutes. To pass, you must get at least 32 correct answers, which corresponds to 80%.

Each correct answer is worth one point, and there is no penalty for wrong answers. Therefore, it is always better to answer all questions.

Civic test topics

The questions cover five main areas:

      1. Principles and values of the Republic (secularism, symbols, motto)

      1. French institutions

      1. Rights and duties

      1. General historical and cultural references

      1. Daily life in France

In practice, more than half of the test focuses on republican values and fundamental rights. Therefore, most of your preparation should focus on these topics to succeed in the 2026 civic test.

You should be able to confidently answer 2026 civic test questions such as:

        • Do men and women have the same rights?

        • Who votes on laws in France?

        • Is school compulsory?

        • What does secularism mean?

      In case of failure

You can retake the test. However, failure almost always causes delays in administrative procedures, sometimes for several months. Therefore, it is best to prepare thoroughly to succeed on your first attempt.

How to prepare effectively the civic test

The best approach is to understand the values rather than memorize answers by heart. A daily review of about 20 minutes is usually sufficient if done consistently.

To succeed in the 2026 civic test, familiarize yourself with the sample questions published by the Ministry of the Interior. These official examples closely reflect the questions asked on the test day, and practicing with them is one of the most effective ways to approach the test calmly and maximize your chances of success.

      Tips for civic test day

The night before, it is better to sleep normally rather than study late. A well-rested mind retains information better than a tired one.

On the day of the test, arrive about 30 minutes early to settle in calmly and listen to the instructions. Before starting, take a few slow breaths to help reduce stress and improve concentration.

During the test, read each question carefully. Many mistakes are caused by reading too quickly. Words like “always,” “forbidden,” or “mandatory” completely change the meaning of a response.

Never leave a question unanswered since there is no penalty. If you get stuck, move on to the next question and come back later. You have roughly one minute per question, which is sufficient if you manage your time well.

Finally, don’t panic if you don’t know some answers. The test does not require a perfect score, and several mistakes are still compatible with success. Trust your logic: very often, the correct answer is simply the one that respects everyone’s rights.
