Abbay of Gordes in the Luberon

L’Isle sur la Sorgue, Cucuron, Gordes, Roussillon, Lourmarin,… What makes the soul of this natural park are the numerous rural villages and historical monuments boasting ancient and historic architecture. The regional natural park is named after the mountain which stretches from Cavaillon to Manosque and culminates at 1125m of altitude.

Perched villages

In the Middle Ages, the mountainous terrain of the Luberon meant the population had to build houses on the heights. This is how the perched villages were born. Among them, many are classified “most beautiful villages of France”. This is the case of Roussillon, located at the heart of the largest ochre deposits of Europe. Its flamboyant colours will charm you throughout your visit.

The village of Gordes – built on the steep slopes of the mountain – impresses with its stone architecture which you can admire on the houses, watermills, abbeys and old hamlets. Then let yourself be surprised by the splendour of the villages of Ansouis, Ménerbes, Bonnieux and Lacoste.

Lourmarin: one beauty, two atmospheres

This village with its three bell towers lies in the middle of the Luberon massif. Here reigns a sophistication that contrasts with the authenticity of the place. Chic shops, galleries and restaurants nestle inside beautiful character houses. If at first glance, the atmosphere seems calm and quiet, Lourmarin buzzes with life all year round with concerts, festivals, markets – and more !

During this journey, punctuated by the song of cicadas and the sweet smell of lavender, you will discover an enchanting environment, towering castles, mysterious bell towers, picturesque streets, forests and vineyards.

Want to admire the architecture and the wide open spaces of this magnificent corner of Provence? Two possibilities for you: go on an excursion with our partner George or rent a car alone or with a small group of students.
